The Rise and Fall of the Three Kindgdoms
In China, 180 A.D., the Han Dynasty was
coming to an end, crumbling under the weight
of corruption and internal politics. The peas-
antry soon turned to the words of a self-styled
holy man and sorcerer, Zhang Jiao, who
preached of a new Way of Peace and an end to
the emperor’s reign.
Four years later, Zhang Jiao consolidated his
followers into an army—an army of untrained,
poorly armed peasants, but an army nonethe-
less—and attempted to overthrow the Han
Dynasty. History came to know this as the
Yellow Turban Rebellion, and it was the match
that set off the powder keg. For the next
hundred years, China was torn apart by dis-
unity, strife, and constant war.
These were times in which legends were born.
Famous generals, such as Yuan Shao, Liu Bei,
Cao Cao, Zhang Fei, and Guan Yu, rose to
battle the threats of the era. Tyrants such as
Dong Zhuo seized power by force, with the
help of Lu Bu, the greatest warrior of the age,
and great men allied to depose them.
China was split into Three Kingdoms during
this period: Wei, Wu, and Shu. The kingdoms’
rulers waged constant war against each other
to fulfill their dreams of a China unified under
their command.
In the end, none of them can be said to have
truly “won.” Shu fell first; its ability to
defend itself died with its strategist, Zhuge
Liang, though it took thirty years for the
kingdom to fall to Wei’s general Deng Ai. Wei
survived for several generations with the Cao
family serving as unwilling figureheads for
the Sima family, until Sima Yan finally
usurped power in 265 A.D. This marked an
end to the 45-year-long Wei Dynasty, and the
beginning of the new Jin Dynasty. Alone
against the rest of China and nearly crippled
by squabbles over the rights to succession,
the descendants of Wu’s Sun family proved
unable to defend themselves. Wu finally fell
in 280 A.D., and the Three Kingdoms were
once again united.
This was a century of great change, and
during it, China’s future was never predictable.
One warrior in the right place could have,
and often did, change the face of China
forever, protecting the Han Dynasty against
rebels or shepherding one of the Three
Kingdoms to unknown glories.
In this game, you are that warrior. Head into
battle and create history!

Getting Started
Getting Started
While there are plenty of similarities between
this game and the previous installments in the
Dynasty Warriors
®
franchise, many new addi-
tions, enhancements, and changes have been
implemented to make it an even more exciting,
intense, and immersive experience. This guide
is designed to be your companion on the battle-
field, giving you the information, strategies,
and tips you need to help you survive the ever-
encroaching enemy onslaught. Before jumping
into the meat of the game, spend some time
with the accompanying instruction manual,
which will refresh your memory if you have
played a previous
Dynasty Warriors
game, and
help players who are new to the series get up to
speed in what is a deceptively deep and strate-
gic fighting game.
The information we present in this section also
touches on a few key items that are new to the
series and gives you a quick overview of some
of the basics.
Free Mode
Rather than playing a character’s entire story
as in Musou Mode, Free Mode allows you to
select a single battle or scenario to play. These
are essentially the same battles you will play in
Musou Mode, although you can play them as
any unlocked character. Not all of the game’s
battles are available in Free Mode at the start—
you must unlock them first in Musou Mode by
winning them.
Challenge Mode
Challenge Mode presents players with a series
of quick battles that have set parameters, such
as Time Attack, Bridge Melee, Rampage, and
Sudden Death. At the end of a game in
Challenge Mode, you get a password that you
can enter at Koei’s ranking website to see
where you fall in line with other
Dynasty
Warriors
®
5
players around the world: Check
out www.koei.com/rankings.
Game Modes
There are two main game modes: Musou and
Free. In addition, a third Challenge Mode gives
players the chance to play a variety of
minigame-style battles.
Musou Mode
Musou Mode is the game’s story mode, where
you can select from a roster of available officers
from one of the kingdoms and play their stories
from beginning to end. By satisfying certain
conditions as you play through the Musou
Mode, you unlock even more characters (a total
of 48!). For a list of these conditions, turn to
the “Extras” section in the back of this guide.

Game Information
Interim Saves
While you can save your game in between
battles through the Options screen, you can
also choose to use an Interim Save during
battles. Depending on the difficulty level, you
only get a predetermined number of these
saves, which, if you die, allow you to return to
the battle at the moment you last saved. Use
these Interim saves wisely, as some battles can
take nearly an hour to complete, and starting
back at the beginning because you forgot to
save can be a tough lesson to learn.
Starting a Game
Pick a game mode and then choose an officer
from one of the kingdoms. In Musou Mode,
each officer has his or her own story, which is
broken down into a number of stages. In Free
Mode, pick a scenario and then choose your
officer. Either way, you are presented with the
Preparation screen, where you can strategize
over the battlefield map, check the Conditions
for victory and defeat, look at the enemy and
ally Unit Information, and get a glimpse of the
Overview of the battle scenario. You can also
equip weapons and items, as well as choose a
bodyguard from your current roster.
Bodyguards
Also new to this game is the Bodyguard
system. The number of guards able to shadow
you in battle has been reduced to one, but
bodyguards are now as strong as the famous
officers. There is a wide variety of bodyguard
types from which to select. Initially, you start
with four bodyguards from which to choose,
but after you clear certain battles, you earn new
officers who want to serve under you.
Bodyguards also level up and earn points as
you progress through the battles, which earn
them the following new abilities:
Bases
New to this game is a variety of bases. Attacking
enemy bases and defending your own has a
major influence on each battle, and can literally
be the factor that determines who wins or
loses. These bases come in four varieties,
including Defense, Supply, Attack, and
Checkpoint. To claim an enemy base, you must
find and eliminate the guard captain, who is
usually somewhere inside the base. Depending
on which base it is, you receive a helpful item
that increases either your Attack, Defense, Life,
or Musou ability. Claiming enemy Checkpoints
stems the flow of new troops onto the battle-
field. Whenever you see a Checkpoint on the
edge of the map, seek out and eliminate the
gate captain to secure the gates.
Before entering into battle, you can locate and
note all the bases on the map in the Preparation
screen. Attack Bases are shown as triangles,
Defense Bases are shown as squares, Supply
Bases are shown as circles, and Checkpoints are
arrows. If they’re blue, they’re friendly and if
they’re red, they belong to your enemy.
Enlist:
After clearing each stage, a different
bodyguard wants to serve under you.
Fame:

to decrease.
Find:

weapon to your character.
Heal:

in trouble.
Item:

a stage.
Link:
Items appear easily after combo attacks
and become easier to level up.
Rage:

when in trouble.
